So yesterday was a fairly decent day in Washington; cloudy but no rain. So we decided to take advantage of the day and take the training wheels off of bikes. Ben has been asking us to for a few weeks now. He likes to hang out with the school-age neighbor boys and they are "so cool" with all their bike tricks that require no training wheels.
Hannah was a little more hesitant, but of course she didn't want to be outdone by her LITTLE brother. So she waited until Ben's were off (and he was mastering things), before asking Daddy to take hers off as well. I think she wanted to make sure Ben didn't get hurt before she jumped on the training wheel free bandwagon.
We decided that since we have a fairly flat and large grass area in the front of the house; that maybe the kids would feel safer learning there. That would also minimize blood if anyone took a big fall.
Does Ben look nervous at all? Heck no! That kid was laughing the whole time! He literally mastered his bike in 10 minutes. Seriously! Josh held him a few times, and then started letting go. Once Ben realized that he had to look ahead and not at us, he was a pro.
Next up, Hannah Banana. She was much more nervous then Ben. She got frustrated a couple of times, but refused to give up. We were so proud when she got it, and wow: so was she! They were both so cute giggling and balancing with all their might.
Next step: learning to get started without Mom or Dad holding the back of your bike. Ben realized that if he jumped off of his bike and spun the pedals around he could get them where they needed to be for a nice start. It was pretty funny to watch him throw his bike down and move those pedals. But Josh showed the kids the "run/walk while on the bike" trick and they had it down within minutes.
Last step: the road. I will be 100% honest. I was WAY more scared of the kids on the road then they were. But we took it slow and held the bikes if they felt like we should. Pretty soon we had this...
Two bike riding professionals. I literally got a tear in my eye as they met this milestone; both of them at the same time! Two at once! What a big accomplishment for them both. I did tell Josh "it's time to stock up the first aid kit" Bike accidents are another childhood rite of passage. AHH!
