School is so Cool!

I have to tell everyone how amazing Hannah's school is! I love it, and of course so does she. My big five year old attends Kindergarten at Highland Elementary, which is a Scottish Storyline School. That means that in addition to regular curriculum they are able to create "storylines" as well. To us that means they get to play/create/develop characters based on different themes. The last storyline was called Katie Morag. Katie is a character in a children's book series made famous in Ireland. The stories chronicle her adventures and life. It was so fun to see the kids get into the stories. They received mail from Ireland, baked Scottish pancakes, made books of their own adventures (and took them to Preschool to read to younger kids), and so much more. At the end of each storyline the class has a culmination night. The picture above is Hannah and her class at their Katie Morag Culmination. They shared a story with their parents, played games, and even got to meet the REAL Katie Morag (a middle school girl who played along with us). They had a blast! You can see in the picture above their Frieze that the kids created. That represents what they are studying. See the islands and ships? SO FUN! But it gets better... this storyline they just started is school-wide. The WHOLE school is doing a storyline on San Francisco. Each hallway is a different "hub" of San Francisco! Hannah's class is in the South Beach district which represents Little Italy. They are creating their own pizza place, called San Fran Pizza Pan. It is adorable. I can't wait for the culmination night on this one! One of the school wide activities they did this week was a "foggy day" in San Francisco. When the bell rang for the kids to come inside there were parents directing them; and warning them to be careful of the fog. To top it off they had real fog machines making fog in the hallways. It was amazing!


This other picture is Hannah's class on Halloween. I think it is a little blurry, but you can see how cute the kids are. And can you really blame me for a blurry picture, I was standing on the edge of the sink for heaven's sake. Totally worth it.
